Posted on May 28, 2025

Loose Park is one of Kansas City’s most beautiful and beloved parks. Located at 5200 Wornall Road, it’s a peaceful place filled with flowers, trees, and fun things to do. Whether you’re looking for a place to walk, play, or just relax, Loose Park has something for everyone.

A Little Bit of Loose Park History

Loose Park has a rich history. Before it became a park, the land was used as a golf course by the Kansas City Country Club. In 1926, Ella Loose bought the land and gave it to the city in honor of her husband, Jacob Loose, who founded the Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company. The park officially opened in 1927 and has been a favorite spot for Kansas Citians ever since.

What You Can Find at Loose Park

The park covers 75 acres and offers many attractions:

  • Rose Garden: The Laura Conyers Smith Rose Garden has about 4,000 roses. It’s stunning in May and June when the roses bloom.
  • Walking Trails: A one-mile loop trail is perfect for walking, jogging, or biking. You’ll see lovely trees, flowers, and even a small lake along the way.
  • Playground: Kids can enjoy a large playground with swings, slides, and climbing structures.
  • Picnic Areas: Plenty of spots with tables and shade where families can picnic.
  • Lake and Ducks: The park has a peaceful lake where you can watch ducks and enjoy the view.
  • Tennis Courts: The west side of the park has courts for tennis players.
  • Japanese Tea Garden: Added in 2006, this serene garden is a symbol of friendship between Kansas City and its sister city, Kurashiki, Japan.

Fun Facts

  • Loose Park was the site of the Battle of Westport during the Civil War. Today, markers tell about this important event.
  • In 1977, artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude created an art installation in the park called “Wrapped Walk Ways,” which featured bright fabric covering the paths.
  • The park is a popular wedding spot, especially in the Rose Garden.
